Unrest in Kurram, Pakistan: Parachinar Under Siege Amidst Violence
In Kurram, Pakistan, over 100 villages, including the district headquarters of Parachinar, have been under siege for more than three months. This follows a tragic attack on a convoy traveling from Peshawar to Parachinar on November 21, 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 50 people, including women and children.
The main road to Parachinar remains closed, preventing the delivery of essential supplies like food. Local elders attribute the ongoing unrest to the unstable border with Afghanistan. They believe reconciliation is necessary to resolve the conflict.
A curfew is currently in effect as police and security forces in Lower Kurram engage with insurgents. Twenty families have already fled their homes, with some relocating to Hangu or seeking refuge with relatives.
The situation in Kurram is dire, with persistent security issues and severe shortages of basic necessities. The civil administration and law enforcement are conducting a clearance operation to remove criminals from the district, following approval from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government for stringent action against those responsible for attacks on relief convoys.
Meanwhile, affected residents whose shops and homes were destroyed in the riots after the convoy attack are still awaiting compensation. At least 400 shops and hundreds of houses were damaged in the incident.
