The University of Sharjah (UoS) in the UAE has introduced the Centre of Excellence for Public Health, a part of the Research Institute for Medical and Health Sciences (RIMHS). Hussein Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health at the Ministry of Health and Prevention, highlighted the centre's crucial role in tackling modern health challenges, such as non-communicable diseases and global health crises. The launch event was attended by Prof. Hamid Al Naimiy, Chancellor of UoS, and other officials from the Ministry of Health and Prevention.
The centre aims to be a strategic partner in developing health policies that cater to community needs. Basema Saddik, Director of the Centre, mentioned that the centre will focus on promoting research, education, and innovation in public health through nine multidisciplinary research teams comprising 40 researchers. Hamzah Alzubaidi, coordinator of the research team, announced the first initiative, "National Campaign to Address Diabetes Stigma."
The Centre of Excellence for Public Health will work to establish partnerships between the university, government entities, private sector, and local and regional organizations. It will focus on translating health research into policies and practical initiatives to address community health issues, with an emphasis on capacity building and community empowerment.
