Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Sukanta Majumdar Celebrate Gandhi Jayanti and Swacchata Abhiyan in Kolkata
On October 2, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw attended the Swacchata Abhiyan program in Garden Reach, Kolkata, West Bengal. He paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti, with Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar also present.
Vaishnaw visited Hyderi Manzil, also known as Gandhi Bhavan, in Beliaghata, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during a critical period in August 1947. He extended his wishes to the people on Gandhi Jayanti and the beginning of ‘Devi Paksha’.
Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of cleanliness, stating, “Today is the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and also the beginning of ‘Devi Paksha’. ‘Swacchta Abhiyan’ is being celebrated across the country, so we need to ensure that cleanliness is maintained everywhere.”
He also visited the Braithwaite & Co. Ltd. plant in Kolkata, a public sector company manufacturing railway wagons. Vaishnaw noted the company’s revival over the past decade, with revenue increasing from Rs 1,100 crore last year to Rs 1,400 crore this year. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the company’s revival and inspected the plant to plan the Swacchata initiative.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a cleanliness drive with schoolchildren, celebrating 10 years of the ‘Swacchata Hi Seva’ campaign. He highlighted the success of the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’, calling it the world’s biggest and most successful movement of the century, driven by public participation and leadership.
Modi stated, “The Swachh Bharat Mission is a symbol of the selfless commitment of crores of Indians, and in the last 10 years, crores of Indians have adopted this mission and made it a part of their lives.”
