Union Minister Smriti Irani Demands Answers in RG Medical College Case
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 16: Union Minister Smriti Irani has called for a thorough investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Speaking on Friday, Irani raised several critical questions based on media reports.
Irani questioned, “As per media reports, blood was oozing out of her body. The question arises did no one hear the screams of that woman on that floor? Is this the work of one rapist?” She also demanded accountability from the police, asking, “Who is the one because of whom the rapist was assured in the hospital that he could return home after committing the rape? Who is the one who continued the renovation on the same floor of the hospital even after such a heinous crime? What action has been taken so far against the officer in the police who called the parents of this woman and told them that the girl had committed suicide? Who instructed that officer to tell the girl’s parents that it was a suicide? If that officer is his superior officer, then how did he reach this conclusion?”
Meanwhile, 25 people have been arrested in connection with the vandalism by an unidentified mob at the RG Kar Hospital campus on August 14, which caused damage to the protest site, vehicles, and public property. Security officials had to intervene to disperse the crowd.
On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim’s family has alleged that she was raped and murdered. This incident has triggered nationwide protests by doctors and medical fraternities.
