Union Minister Jitendra Singh Talks About Fair Elections in Jammu and Kashmir Under PM Modi

Union Minister Jitendra Singh stated that elections in Jammu and Kashmir are now being held fairly under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He mentioned that in the past, elections were marked by low voter turnout and shop closures in Srinagar due to boycott calls. Singh criticized Rahul Gandhi for his comments against the Indian government during his foreign trips, stating that the common people of India do not support this.

Singh also accused mainstream parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), National Conference, and Congress of having connections with Pakistan. He noted that in the last 30-35 years, polling dates in Jammu and Kashmir were often followed by boycott calls from Pakistan, leading to low voter turnout and favored candidates winning.

The first phase of the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir was held on September 18, with a voter turnout of 61.13%. Kishtwar district recorded the highest turnout at 80.14%, followed by Ramban at 70.55%, Doda at 71.34%, Kulgam at 62.60%, Anantnag at 57.84%, and Shopian at 55.96%. Pulwama district had the lowest turnout at 46.65%.

The Congress and National Conference are contesting the elections in alliance, while the PDP, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and People’s Conference are also competing for the 90 Assembly seats. These elections are the first since the abrogation of Article 370 and are being held after nearly ten years.
