Union Minister Giriraj Singh Highlights Technical Textiles as India’s Economic Backbone at Trade Fair

In Guwahati, Assam, Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh emphasized the importance of technical textiles in India’s economy during the 43rd India International Trade Fair. He noted the significance of carbon fibers and the country’s focus on expanding technical textiles, which include 12 sectors. The Prime Minister has allocated Rs1,500 crore for research and development in this area, aiming to boost exports and make technical textiles a key economic driver.

The event’s theme celebrates the 150th birth anniversary of tribal leader Birsa Munda, inspired by the ‘Janjatiya’ community. Singh highlighted efforts to improve the textile value chain, creating better income opportunities for weavers. He also pointed out that India has the largest handloom community globally, focusing on sustainability and energy efficiency. The handloom industry is a leader in producing sustainable products with zero carbon and water footprints.

Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, visited the exhibition, stressing the need to strengthen handloom and handicrafts sectors to boost production and earnings while preserving India’s craft heritage.
