UAE Urges Action to Address Famine Crisis in Sudan
Abu Dhabi [UAE], August 8: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is deeply concerned about the severe humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where over 25 million people are facing extreme food insecurity. The situation is particularly dire in North Darfur, especially in Zamzam camp, which houses over half a million displaced individuals.
The UAE welcomes the United Nations Security Council’s meeting to address the famine in Sudan and stresses the need for an emergency response to secure a ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid. Trucks filled with lifesaving supplies are stuck at the Sudanese border while thousands suffer from hunger.
The UAE condemns the use of starvation as a weapon of war and the denial of humanitarian access, calling these actions violations of international humanitarian law. The UAE urges the international community to scale up cross-border and cross-line humanitarian access to save lives.
The UAE calls on the Security Council to use all available tools to address the crisis, including authorizing UN agencies to deliver aid across the country. The UAE also calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and supports ongoing diplomatic efforts for a peaceful resolution.
The UAE has allocated USD 70 million to address urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan and USD 30 million to support Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries.
