The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been recognized as one of the top 35 countries worldwide with the largest shipping fleets by tonnage and capacity, according to the 2024 report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) reported that 10 Gulf container ports are ranked among the 70 most efficient ports globally in 2024, out of 405 ports worldwide. The Gulf commercial fleet made up 54.2% of the total Arab commercial fleet in 2023.
Most GCC countries exceeded the Arab average in the Liner Shipping Connectivity Index, scoring 100.5 in 2023. The number of major Gulf seaports surpassed 25 in 2024. In terms of container productivity, two Gulf ports were recognized as high-production ports, with output over 4 million containers, while eight ports were classified as medium-production ports, with output between 0.5 million and 4 million containers.
