Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha Leads Relief Efforts Amid Severe Floods

Agartala, Tripura has been hit by heavy and unprecedented rainfall over the past two days, causing severe floods and displacing 30,000 people. The state government, led by Chief Minister Manik Saha, has set up 321 relief camps to help those affected.

Heavy Rainfall and Landslides

The southern districts of Tripura have experienced extremely heavy rainfall, with some areas recording 375 mm and 350 mm of rain. This has led to landslides, resulting in the loss of seven lives. Schools, colleges, and universities have been closed due to the severe weather.

Government Response

Chief Minister Manik Saha explained that the torrential rain was caused by a sudden depression in the Bay of Bengal. He has been in constant contact with officials to manage the situation. Relief teams, including NDRF, SDRF, BSF, police, volunteers, and local officials, have been deployed to assist in rescue operations.

“We have set up 321 relief camps and more than 30,000 people are there. Everything is taken care of, such as their food, water, and hygiene,” said Chief Minister Saha. He also mentioned that additional NDRF teams are arriving from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to help control the situation.

Future Concerns

The rain is expected to continue for several more days, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage, especially in the agricultural and horticultural sectors. Chief Minister Saha visited relief camps at Ramthakur Higher Secondary Girls School and Swami Vivekananda School to oversee the management and distribute relief materials.

He also assessed the flood situation at Agartala through the Integrated Command & Control Centre at IT Bhavan to prioritize relief efforts.
