Tragic Fire at Jhansi Medical College

A devastating fire at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Jhansi Medical College in Uttar Pradesh resulted in the tragic loss of ten newborns. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak announced that DNA tests might be conducted to identify three of the deceased infants. Seven have been identified, while others suffered burn injuries.
Pathak stated, “Ten newborns have died, seven have been identified, and three are yet to be identified. If required, DNA tests will be conducted.” He assured that a thorough investigation is underway, with a report expected within 24 hours. The fire is suspected to have started due to a short circuit in an oxygen concentrator.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences, calling the incident “heartbreaking.” Chief Medical Superintendent Sachin Mahor explained that the fire spread rapidly due to the oxygen-rich environment, despite efforts to extinguish it. Former MP Dr. Chandra Pal Singh Yadav criticized the administration for negligence, while BJP MLA Rajeev Singh Parichha praised the rescue efforts.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered expedited relief efforts and promised strict action against those responsible. Multi-level investigations are ongoing to determine the cause and accountability of the fire.
