Tragic Death of Infant in Mainpuri Hospital: Family Alleges Nurse’s Negligence

In Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, a family has alleged that their newborn died because a nurse refused to hand over the baby until a payment was made. The baby’s condition reportedly worsened during the delay, leading to his death.

Incident Details

According to Sujit Kumar, a resident of Anoha Patara in Kurg village, Karhal district, he admitted his wife, Sanjali, to the CHC hospital in Karhal on September 18 due to labor pains. Sanjali delivered a healthy baby boy on the morning of September 19.

Sujit claimed that after the delivery, Nurse Jyoti demanded Rs 5,100 before handing over the baby. When he couldn’t pay immediately, the nurse allegedly placed the baby on a table and refused to hand him over despite repeated pleas. After forty minutes, Sujit paid the amount, but by then, the baby’s condition had worsened.

Medical Response

Chief Medical Officer Dr. R.C. Gupta stated, “The family members claimed they repeatedly pleaded with the nurse to give them the baby, but she refused, resulting in the infant’s death.” The baby was referred to Safai Medical College for treatment but passed away shortly after arriving. Doctors at Safai Medical College attributed the death to a lack of proper care during labor and delivery.

Investigation and Actions

The family has demanded action, and a complaint has been filed with local authorities and the Chief Minister. A three-member committee, including two ACMs and one medical officer, has been formed to investigate the matter. The committee is expected to submit its findings within three days. Meanwhile, Nurse Jyoti has been transferred to another location to prevent her from influencing the investigation.

An official stated, “We have taken cognizance of the matter. A newborn died due to the nurse’s inhumane behavior, which caused the baby’s death. The authorities are committed to ensuring justice for the family, and the responsible individual will face legal action.”
