In Chapra, Bihar, a tragic incident occurred where 20 people lost their lives after consuming spurious liquor. This was confirmed by Siwan SP Amitesh Kumar. In response, Chapra Superintendent Kumar Ashish announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team. Three individuals have been arrested, and an FIR has been filed against eight people. Additionally, local law enforcement officers, including the Chowkidar and Panchayat Beat Police, have been suspended. An explanation has been demanded from the SHO of Masrak Police Station and the Masrak Zone ALTF in charge of departmental action. Legal proceedings are also being initiated against the Bhagwanpur SHO and Prohibition ASI, as stated by District Magistrate Mukul Kumar Gupta.

A relative of one of the deceased shared that the victim’s health deteriorated after consuming alcohol on October 15, leading to his hospitalization. The investigation into the case is ongoing.

Political Reactions

The opposition party, RJD, has criticized the Nitish Kumar government, questioning how spurious liquor is available despite the prohibition law in Bihar. RJD leader Mrityunjay Tiwari expressed concern over the recurring issue of deaths due to spurious liquor, especially during festivals like Holi and Diwali. He accused the NDA government of protecting liquor mafias, which undermines the prohibition law.
