Traffic Resumes on Badrinath Highway After Landslide in Chamoli, Uttarakhand

On Saturday, traffic partially resumed on the Badrinath National Highway near Joshimath in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, after it was blocked due to a landslide. Currently, only small vehicles and pedestrians are allowed to proceed through the route.

Earlier on Thursday, the highway was opened for pedestrians. The SDRF Uttarakhand Police shared a video showing their personnel helping pilgrims and polling parties cross the landslide-affected zone on foot. They wrote, ‘District Chamoli: On July 11, 2024, Badrinath National Highway was opened for pedestrians and polling parties. The passengers are being helped safely to cross the road by the SDRF jawans.’

On Wednesday, the road was blocked due to a landslide near the Patal Ganga Langsi tunnel. Heavy rain in parts of Uttarakhand over the past few days has triggered landslides, blocking the highway at several points. On July 5, traffic was halted for several hours due to debris at two places in Chamoli.

Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana also wrote, ‘Due to road blockage in Joshimath, polling parties from remote polling stations such as Drongiri, Jumma, Kosha, and Arudhi Patudi, along with polling material, are being transported from Joshimath to Gopeshwar by helicopter.’
