TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee Urges PM Modi for Anti-Rape Law Amid Protests in Kolkata

TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has called on BJP leaders to ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi to introduce an anti-rape law in India. This statement came in response to the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protests organized by ‘Paschim Banga Chatra Samaj’ over the recent rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Banerjee criticized the central government for not acting swiftly on this issue, despite their quick decisions on demonetisation and lockdowns. He said, “Overnight the government can announce demonetisation; overnight they can announce lockdown; overnight they can pass an ordinance to monopolise power from the democratically elected Delhi government; then why can’t they introduce an anti-rape law? We will take the fight to Delhi. You started it, but we will end it.”

The ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest march started from College Square in Kolkata and saw heightened security around the West Bengal state secretariat. Protestors clashed with police at Santragachi in Howrah, leading to the use of water cannons by the police.

The protests were sparked by the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor, whose body was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9. This incident has led to nationwide outrage and several protests demanding justice for the victim.
