Tibetan Lawmakers Criticize China's Sanctions on Canadian NGOs and Individuals
In Dharamshala, India, Tibetan lawmakers in exile have voiced strong criticism against China for imposing sanctions on two Canadian civil society organizations and 20 individuals. These sanctions target the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project and the Canada Tibet Committee. Dolma Tsering, the Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament in-exile, expressed concern over China's actions, urging the United Nations and democratic nations to condemn these measures.
Dolma Tsering highlighted the reach of the Chinese Communist regime, stating that their influence extends beyond Tibet and into the free world, creating fear among people. She emphasized the need for global accountability and urged nations to stand against China's transnational aggression.
Namgyal Dolkar, a member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile, described China's actions as a threat to nations with veto power in the United Nations Security Council. She noted that this is the first time China has sanctioned NGOs and individuals, calling it "shameful." Dolkar warned of a potential trend where any opposition to the Chinese Communist Party could face similar sanctions.
In December, the Canadian government condemned China's sanctions, describing them as arbitrary and expressing solidarity with the targeted groups. Canada called on China to respect international law and advised Canadians in China to exercise caution due to the risk of arbitrary law enforcement.
