Tibetan Communities in Mandi Thank US for Passing Resolve Tibet Act
The Tibetan communities of Pandoh Tashiling, Mandi Town, and Rewalsar (Tso Pema) gathered to express their gratitude to the US Government for passing the Resolve Tibet Act into law. This event was revealed by the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) of the Tibetan government in exile, based in Dharmshala.
Esteemed guests, including the Tibetan Settlement Officer and the President of the Local Tibetan Assembly, attended the event. They thanked the US Government, bipartisan US Congress members, and all organizations and individuals who contributed to this milestone.
The Resolve Tibet Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden on July 12, 2024, aims to facilitate dialogue between the Chinese government and Tibetan leaders, including the Dalai Lama. It builds on previous legislation like the Tibetan Policy Act of 2002 and the Tibetan Policy and Support Act of 2019.
This Act seeks to improve the chances for a negotiated agreement on Tibet, reinforcing America’s stance on the Tibet-China conflict. The event highlights the importance of international collaboration and diplomatic efforts in resolving global issues.
Tibet came under Chinese control in the 1950s after a military invasion by the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader, fled into exile in 1959 and established the Tibetan government in exile in India. China views Tibet as part of its territory and has implemented policies to integrate Tibet into the Chinese state, including migration of Han Chinese into Tibet and strict control over Tibetan activities.
Human rights organizations and Tibetan advocacy groups have raised concerns about political repression, restrictions on freedom of speech, arbitrary detention of activists, and cultural suppression in Tibet. There are also reports of environmental degradation and resource exploitation in the region. Internationally, Tibet’s status remains a sensitive issue, with calls for dialogue between China and Tibetan representatives to address grievances peacefully.
