Three Congress MLAs Join NPP in Meghalaya

On Monday, three Congress Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) joined the National People’s Party (NPP) in the presence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. This move increases NPP’s strength to 31 in the 60-seat Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Chief Minister’s Statement

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed his joy on X, stating, “Overjoyed to welcome 3 MLAs from Congress to NPP. Their induction is a testament to faith in our government’s vision. With this merger, we now have 31 members in the 60-seat Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, securing a full majority! Cheers to our supporters & well-wishers!”

Current Assembly Composition

In the 60-seat assembly, the NDA now has 46 MLAs: NPP with 31, BJP with two, United Democratic Party with 12, and Hill State People’s Democratic Party with two. Two independent candidates also support the NDA alliance. The opposition’s INDIA bloc has 13 MLAs: TMC with five, Congress with one, and Voice of the People Party with four.

New Tourism Initiative

Additionally, Chief Minister Sangma announced the appointment of locals as ‘tourist assistants’ to enhance tourism safety and provide job opportunities. These semi-uniformed personnel will serve as tour guides, provide security, and offer information to tourists. Sangma emphasized the need for collective action to promote a positive environment for tourism.
