Thousands Protest in Toronto Against Violence in Bangladesh After Sheikh Hasina’s Resignation

On Sunday, thousands of Canadians gathered in downtown Toronto to protest against the violence targeting Hindus in Bangladesh. This protest followed the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Protest Details

People from various backgrounds, including Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, and Jewish communities, came together to show their solidarity. The protesters chanted, ‘We want justice – Bangladesh Bangladesh,’ and urged the Canadian Government to press the Dhaka Government to protect Hindus in Bangladesh.

Community Concerns

One protester mentioned that they had sent emails to Bangladeshi mosques in Toronto but had not received any responses yet. He expressed hope that they might hear back soon, possibly due to the weekend.

He also highlighted the unprecedented number of people who gathered, which he saw as a positive sign. However, he expressed disappointment over the lack of response from Canadian politicians despite multiple emails, tweets, and calls.

Global Reactions

Community leaders voiced their concerns over the attacks on Hindus. Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for the safety and protection of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. In a message on X, he expressed his best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus and hoped for a return to normalcy, ensuring the safety of all minority communities.

Many Bangladeshi Hindus have been fleeing to neighboring India to escape the violence. Hindus, who make up about 8% of Bangladesh’s 170 million population, have traditionally supported Hasina’s Awami League party, which has faced backlash following violent clashes between anti-quota protesters and security forces last month.
