The textile industry leaders gathered in Bengaluru to discuss the growing importance of the European Union (EU) market for India's textile and apparel exports. The workshop, organized by the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), focused on the EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) frameworks.
Experts highlighted the challenges and opportunities these regulations present, emphasizing the need for transparency, accountability, and sustainable practices. CSDDD is a new EU law requiring companies to check their global value chains for human rights and environmental risks.
Chandrima Chatterjee, Secretary General of CITI, opened the event by stressing the importance of aligning with global standards. Rakesh Mehra, Chairman of CITI, emphasized adapting to new regulatory frameworks.
H.S. Devaprasad, Regional Chairman of CMAI-SR, urged Indian suppliers to engage with these changes. Mousumi Sarangi and Annabel Meurs from Fair Wear Foundation provided insights into the CSDDD and HRDD frameworks, noting their potential to become global standards.
Discussions included the future of contracts between brands and suppliers, with a focus on mandatory due diligence clauses. The regulations, initially for EU markets, are expected to set a global benchmark.
Balaji Rajagopalan, Regional Secretary-South Region at CMAI, highlighted the need for collaboration among brands, suppliers, and retailers to implement these frameworks successfully.
