Tensions Rise Between Canada and India Over Diplomatic Expulsions and Sikh Community Safety
In British Columbia, Canada, representatives of a Gurdwara and the Sikh separatist group have expressed concerns over safety following the 2023 shooting of their president. They demand the closure of Indian consulates in Vancouver and Toronto, citing safety concerns for their community. This comes after Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, including the high commissioner, due to alleged involvement in crimes linked to the Khalistan independence movement.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) claims to have evidence of Indian diplomats’ involvement in crimes such as homicide and extortion. The Canadian government has accused the Indian government of being connected to the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot outside a Gurdwara in Surrey in June 2023. However, India has dismissed these allegations as “absurd” and “politically motivated.”
Gurkeerat Singh, a spokesperson for the Gurdwara, stated that the safety of Sikhs remains in question unless Indian consulates are closed. Jatinder Singh Grewal from Sikhs for Justice mentioned that the threat to Sikhs in Canada has increased since the expulsion of an Indian diplomat in 2023. The RCMP is investigating three homicides with potential links to India.
India has retaliated by expelling six Canadian diplomats, including Acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has rejected Canada’s allegations, accusing the Trudeau government of a political agenda and interference in Indian politics. They claim Canada provides space for extremists to threaten Indian diplomats and community leaders.
