Telangana CM Revanth Reddy and Ministers Celebrate Bonalu Festival at Ujjaini Mahakali Temple
On Sunday, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, along with other ministers, visited the Ujjaini Mahakali Temple in Secunderabad to celebrate the Sri Ujjaini Mahakali Bonala Jatara, also known as the Bonalu festival.
Leaders Join in Prayer
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Anil Kumar Yadav, Congress MLA Danam Nagender, and other leaders also offered prayers at the temple. Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and his family presented the first ‘Bonam’ to Ujjaini Mahakali.
About the Bonalu Festival
The Bonalu festival is a traditional Hindu celebration in Telangana dedicated to Goddess Mahakali. It is observed in July and August in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Special ceremonies are held for Goddess Yellamma, a form of Goddess Mahakali.
Festival Traditions
Bonalu is a thanksgiving festival where devotees express gratitude to Goddess Kali for answering their prayers. The term ‘Bonam’ comes from ‘Bhojanam’, meaning feast in Telugu. Women prepare rice with jaggery in new earthen pots, decorated with turmeric, vermillion, and neem leaves. A lamp is lit on top of the pot, which women carry on their heads to offer to Goddess Yellamma, along with bangles and a sari.
