On January 17, Bengaluru will welcome a new US Consulate, a long-awaited development for the city. Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, bringing Mysore Pak sweets to express his gratitude for the Central Government's efforts in facilitating the consulate's establishment.
Efforts and Announcements
Since being elected in 2019, Surya has been advocating for a US Consulate in Bengaluru. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US in June 2023, it was announced that new consulates would open in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, while India would establish a mission in Seattle.
Opening Ceremony
The US Consulate will be inaugurated by the US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, along with other dignitaries. Initially, it will operate from the JW Marriott hotel on Vittal Mallya Road before moving to a permanent location.

Surya highlighted the benefits of the consulate, stating it will aid students, boost commerce, and facilitate travel for businesspeople. Bengaluru, known as India's IT capital, hosts many multinational companies, making the consulate a significant addition.

Surya's persistent efforts included a written request to Jaishankar in 2019 and discussions with US officials. He emphasized the convenience the consulate would bring to Karnataka's residents and its potential to ease the burden on existing consulates in Chennai and Hyderabad.
