Taiwan and Paraguay Strengthen Diplomatic Ties
On November 5, Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te welcomed Paraguayan Senate President Basilio Gustavo Nunez Gimenez to Taipei. This visit is part of efforts to enhance cooperation between Taiwan and Paraguay. Nunez, leading a delegation on a five-day visit, emphasized Paraguay’s commitment to its relationship with Taiwan, marking his first official trip since becoming Senate President in July.
Paraguay, one of only 12 countries that formally recognize Taiwan, is Taiwan’s sole ally in South America. During a meeting at the Presidential Office, Nunez expressed Paraguay’s desire to collaborate on projects that promote prosperity for both nations. He also affirmed support for freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Strait and opposed any increase in regional hostilities.
President Lai thanked Paraguayan President Santiago Pena for supporting Taiwan’s participation in international forums, highlighting progress in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and women’s empowerment. The meeting was attended by Paraguayan senators Derlis Hernan Maidana Zarza, Patrick Paul Kemper Thiede, and Sergio Roberto Rojas Sosa.
Tourism Cooperation Agreement Renewed
In a related development, Taiwan and Paraguay renewed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to enhance tourism cooperation, initially established in 2018. The agreement was signed by Taiwan’s Tourism Administration Director-General Chou Yung-hui and Paraguayan Tourism Minister Angie Duarte de Mellilo. This visit marked Duarte’s first official trip to Taiwan, where she attended the 2024 Taipei International Travel Fair and visited notable sites.
The signing was witnessed by Paraguayan Ambassador to Taiwan, Carlos Fleitas, highlighting both nations’ commitment to deepening ties in tourism, education, and economic cooperation.
