On January 10, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported detecting four aircraft from China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) and six naval vessels from the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) near Taiwan. Three of these aircraft crossed the median line, entering Taiwan's northern and southwestern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The MND shared these details on social media, stating, "We have monitored the situation and responded accordingly."
Earlier, on January 9, the MND noted increased military activity with 11 PLA aircraft and nine PLAN vessels detected. Five aircraft crossed the median line into Taiwan's ADIZ. Despite these incursions, Taiwan proceeded with its annual media event showcasing its military capabilities, including armoured units, army aviation, and special forces.
The event, part of the "Increased Readiness during Chinese New Year," featured missile corvettes and boats demonstrating urgent strikes on maritime targets, and the new rescue ship Da Wu displaying its agility and rescue capabilities.
The Taiwan-China issue is a longstanding geopolitical conflict over Taiwan's sovereignty. Taiwan, known as the Republic of China (ROC), functions as an independent state with its own government and military. However, China views Taiwan as a breakaway province under the "One China" policy, aiming for reunification. This has led to decades of tension since the Chinese Civil War, with China applying diplomatic, economic, and military pressure to isolate Taiwan internationally. Despite this, Taiwan continues to assert its independence, supported by a significant portion of its population.
Taiwan is an island located in East Asia. It is a place where people live and have their own government. Some countries, like China, think Taiwan should be part of them, but Taiwan wants to be its own country.
PLA stands for People's Liberation Army, which is the military force of China. They have soldiers, airplanes, and ships to protect their country.
PLAN stands for People's Liberation Army Navy, which is the naval branch of China's military. They have ships and submarines to protect the seas around China.
ADIZ stands for Air Defense Identification Zone. It's an area in the sky where a country keeps track of airplanes to make sure they are safe and not a threat.
Sovereignty means having the power to govern oneself. In this context, it means Taiwan wants to make its own decisions and not be controlled by China.
A breakaway province is a region that separates from a country and wants to be independent. China thinks Taiwan is a part of it that has separated, but Taiwan sees itself as independent.
