The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) of Taiwan has decided to indefinitely ban the Chinese newspaper Strait Herald from stationing reporters in Taiwan. This decision is due to the newspaper's involvement in "united front work" activities, which are seen as attempts to influence Taiwan's political landscape.
Liang Wen-chieh, the deputy head and spokesperson of the MAC, stated that the Strait Herald is no longer considered a legitimate media platform. The decision follows a court ruling that Lin Jingdong, a member of the newspaper's management committee, fabricated opinion polls about Taiwan's 2024 presidential election to manipulate public opinion.
The ban also affects the newspaper's parent organization, Fujian Daily Newspaper Group, preventing them from assigning reporters to Taiwan. Currently, the Strait Herald has one reporter in Taiwan, whose permit is valid until January 23. The reporter will not be required to leave before the permit expires.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, criticized the MAC's decision, calling it an act of "smearing with groundless accusations" against Chinese reporters in Taiwan.
As of now, there are 12 reporters from eight Chinese media outlets stationed in Taiwan, including China Central Television and Xinhua News Agency, according to the MAC.
