Supreme Court Refuses to Transfer RG Kar Medical College Rape Case from West Bengal

Supreme Court Decision on RG Kar Medical College Rape Case

The Supreme Court of India, located in New Delhi, made a significant decision on Thursday regarding the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape case. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, decided not to transfer the case out of West Bengal. This decision came despite a lawyer’s plea for the transfer, citing a loss of faith in the local police and judiciary by the people of West Bengal.

The Supreme Court noted that while it has transferred trials in other cases, such as those related to Manipur violence, it did not find it necessary in this instance. The court emphasized that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is actively investigating the case and may file additional charges if new evidence emerges. The session judge in Sealdah is currently handling the case, with charges already framed against the accused.

Additionally, the Supreme Court is reviewing a report from the National Task Force (NTF) concerning the prevention of violence against medical professionals. The report includes recommendations for preventing both physical and sexual violence. The court has ordered that this report be shared with all involved parties and the Chief Secretaries of all states and union territories for further action.
