Supreme Court Orders Status Quo at Shambhu Border, Plans Independent Committee
The Supreme Court of India has ordered that the status quo be maintained at the Shambhu border near Ambala, where farmers have been camping since February 13. A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and Ujjal Bhuyan proposed forming an independent committee to address the farmers’ demands.
The Punjab and Haryana governments were asked to suggest committee members within a week. The court also directed the phased removal of barricades to avoid public inconvenience.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Haryana government, opposed the opening of the border, citing potential law and order issues. The bench emphasized the need for trust-building measures and suggested a neutral umpire to mediate between the state and the farmers.
The Supreme Court was hearing an appeal against a July 10 order by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had directed the opening of the highway and removal of barricades within seven days. The farmers have been protesting for a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
