Supreme Court Delays Hearing on ED Officer’s Bribery Case Transfer to CBI

The Supreme Court of India has postponed the hearing on the Directorate of Enforcement’s (ED) request to transfer the investigation of bribery allegations against its officer, Ankit Tiwari, from Tamil Nadu’s Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The delay occurred because the ED’s representative, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, was unavailable.

A bench of justices, Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, adjourned the hearing. Ankit Tiwari, who was arrested in December 2023 for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a doctor in Dindigul district, is currently out on interim bail with strict conditions. These conditions include not influencing witnesses, not tampering with evidence, and not leaving Tamil Nadu without permission.

The Tamil Nadu government has been asked to respond to Tiwari’s plea challenging the Madras High Court’s decision to deny him bail in the money laundering case. According to Tamil Nadu officials, Tiwari and his team had been threatening people and accepting bribes to close their cases in the Enforcement Directorate.
