Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Celebrates 39th National Eye Donation Fortnight in Guwahati
Guwahati (Assam), September 5: Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya in Guwahati successfully observed the 39th National Eye Donation Fortnight. This event honored the selflessness of eye donors and highlighted the importance of eye donation awareness.
Importance of Eye Donation
Eye donation is a selfless act where one person helps another regain vision. Corneal blindness is common, and corneal transplantation, where a diseased cornea is replaced with a donated one, can restore vision. Currently, only human corneas can be used for this procedure, and they must be collected within six hours of death.
Who Can Donate?
Anyone with a healthy cornea, regardless of age, gender, or medical history, can donate their eyes. This includes people who have had eye surgeries or wear glasses.

The event was attended by Prof Dr. Dhrubajyoti Borah, Vice Chancellor of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, and Lion Seema Goenka, Governor of Lions Club (Dist 322G). Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee and Dr. Kasturi Bhattacharjee of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya welcomed the guests and spoke about the significance of eye donation.
Dr. Balmukund Agarwal, Senior Consultant and HOD of Cornea & Director of the Eye Bank at Nethralaya, concluded the event with a vote of thanks. Representatives from various NGOs also participated in the event.
