In a historic move, South Korea's National Assembly voted to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo. This decision came less than two weeks after he assumed the role following the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol for declaring martial law.
The impeachment motion passed with a unanimous 192-0 vote, marking the first time an acting president in South Korea has been impeached by parliament. The main opposition Democratic Party (DP), which holds a majority in the Assembly, introduced the motion.
The DP cited five reasons for Han's impeachment, including his involvement in Yoon's martial law imposition and his refusal to promulgate two special counsel bills targeting Yoon and First Lady Kim Keon Hee. The DP argued that Han's actions were a tactic to delay proceedings related to Yoon's martial law declaration and corruption allegations involving Kim Keon Hee.
The ruling People Power Party contended that Han should be considered the president during the vote, while the DP maintained he should be seen as the Prime Minister. The impeachment motion was introduced after a Cabinet meeting led by Han ended without addressing the two special counsel bills.
DP floor leader, Rep. Park Chan-dae, criticized Han's actions, suggesting they were intended to prolong the situation surrounding Yoon's martial law declaration.
