Wellington [New Zealand], September 10: New Zealand’s all-rounder Sophie Devine will captain the Kiwi squad in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. This will be Sophie’s ninth consecutive appearance at the Women’s T20 World Cup. The 35-year-old aims to win the trophy that has eluded New Zealand since they were runners-up in 2009 and 2010.

The squad features many experienced players, including Suzie Bates, Lea Tahuhu, Amelia Kerr, and Maddy Green. Devine and Bates have participated in every Women’s T20 World Cup edition. Rosemary Mair, who missed the England tour in July due to a back injury, has been added to strengthen the pace attack. Other pace bowlers include Jess Kerr, Tahuhu, Hannah Rowe, and Molly Penfold. The spin attack will be led by Leigh Kasperek, Amelia Kerr, and Fran Jonas, suitable for UAE conditions.

New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer expressed confidence in the squad, highlighting the blend of experience and youth. He congratulated the players and emphasized the importance of Devine and Bates’ experience. Sawyer said, “Soph and Suze have a huge amount of tournament experience from World Cups to franchise leagues, so we’ll certainly be leaning on that knowledge in what’s going to be a pretty intense competition.”

New Zealand is placed in Group A alongside Australia, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The tournament will begin in October, with warm-up matches against South Africa and England.
