Shubman Gill Talks About Confidence Boost from England Series and Upcoming Bangladesh Tests

New Delhi [India], September 10: Indian cricketer Shubman Gill shared that his performance in the series against England was a significant confidence boost during a time when he struggled with consistency in Test cricket. Gill discussed this on Jio Cinema on Monday.

Gill mentioned that he had never played a five-match Test series before the home series against England, and his performance in the series helped him gain confidence. He said, “That was a big confidence boost for me, especially after losing the first Test match. Quite a few players were unavailable, so there was pressure on us to win the series.”

Gill, known for his impressive white-ball cricket, gained fame with a remarkable 91-run knock against Australia at the Gabba in 2021, helping India secure a series win. Despite his consistent white-ball performance, Gill faced challenges in the longer format after his breakthrough series against Australia.

Following poor performances in England, the ICC World Test Championship final, and the South Africa tour between 2022 and early 2024, Gill’s place in the Test side was questioned. However, a strong series against England at home silenced critics. In six Tests and 11 innings this year, Gill has scored 498 runs at an average of 49.80, with two centuries and two fifties.

Gill recently led India A against India B in the Duleep Trophy, scoring 25 and 21 runs respectively. Looking ahead to the two-match Test series against Bangladesh starting September 19, Gill emphasized not underestimating any international side. He praised Bangladesh for their recent clean sweep against Pakistan and the performance of their pacers and middle-order batters.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the first Test against Bangladesh, including pacers Akash Deep and Yash Dayal, with the latter receiving his first call-up. The series will start on September 19 in Chennai, followed by the second Test in Kanpur from September 27. India currently leads the ICC World Test Championship standings.
