Sharad Pawar Supports Rahul Gandhi’s Call for Caste Census in India
In Nagpur, Maharashtra, Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP), expressed his support for Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s demand for a caste census. Pawar emphasized that his party has been advocating for this for three years, believing it will reveal crucial facts and potentially increase the current 50% reservation limit. He stated, “We have been demanding the caste census for 3 years. The facts will come before the country. It will be necessary to increase the limit of reservation which is 50 percent today. A clear picture will emerge.”
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to endorse a caste census and address representation issues for marginalized communities. Gandhi is committed to removing the 50% reservation cap to ensure social justice. He questioned the Prime Minister’s silence on the need for data on Dalits and OBCs in business and judiciary sectors.
In Telangana, a caste census is being conducted for the first time. Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that the survey, which began on November 6, will continue until November 30. Each enumerator is tasked with surveying 150 households, and decisions will be made based on the findings to benefit these households. The Congress party and the INDIA bloc have consistently supported a nationwide caste census, calling it a “progressive and significant step.”
