Transforming Lighthouses into Tourist Attractions

New Delhi, India – July 11

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, led by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, has launched a plan to turn lighthouses into tourist destinations. This initiative was discussed during a stakeholders meeting in Vizhinjam, Kerala, organized by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL).

Key Announcements

A new Laser Light & Sound Show will be introduced at the Vizhinjam Lighthouse to attract more visitors. Over 500,000 tourists visited lighthouses between April and June 2024, showing the success of this vision. The government aims to make lighthouses accessible to elderly and specially-abled visitors.

Government’s Vision

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government is focusing on developing lighthouses as symbols of India’s maritime heritage. Earlier efforts included adding tourist facilities to 75 lighthouses across 10 states and UTs. Sonowal emphasized the potential of lighthouses to showcase India’s culture, history, and social ethos.

New Amenities at Vizhinjam Lighthouse

The Vizhinjam Lighthouse now features a children’s play area, acupressure pathways, a musical fountain, and improved accessibility with a lift for persons with disabilities. Selfie points with animal statues and battery-operated cars have also been added.

Future Plans

The Ministry’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 aims to further develop lighthouses across India, promoting tourism, heritage conservation, and economic growth. This aligns with the MIV 2030 strategy to repurpose lighthouses into multifunctional facilities, including maritime museums and cultural centers.

Collaborative Efforts

The meeting also included the Minister of Tourism, Government of Kerala, Adv PA Mohammed Riyas, and other dignitaries, showing a collaborative effort to maximize the tourism potential of lighthouses in India.
