Sakshi Malik Worried About Vinesh Phogat’s Disqualification at Paris Olympics
Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik expressed her concern for fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat after she was disqualified from the women’s 50kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics. Vinesh was just one win away from securing India’s first gold medal at the event and was set to face United States wrestler Sarah Ann Hildebrandt. However, she was disqualified for exceeding the 50kg weight limit.
Despite numerous attempts to reduce her weight overnight, Vinesh could not meet the required weight. Sakshi Malik shared her worries, stating, “I got to hear that they tried to take blood. After hearing this, I am worried. I am not happy. I keep thinking about her again and what she must be going through.” She also highlighted the struggles wrestlers face in maintaining their weight, saying, “Cutting down weight is our first medal and struggle. We can fight because we have practised for it for a long time. But cutting down the weight three or four days before the fight is a tough part for us.”
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed her shock and disappointment at Vinesh’s disqualification. She assured Vinesh of the complete support of the IOA, the Government of India, and the entire country. PT Usha mentioned that the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has filed an appeal to United World Wrestling (UWW) to reconsider the decision. She praised the efforts of Vinesh, the medical team led by Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, and Chef-de-Mission Gagan Narang in trying to meet the competition requirements.
Meanwhile, wrestler Antim Panghal also faced a tough day, losing her round of 16 bout to her Turkish opponent.
