Saima Wazed Highlights Global Efforts Against Antimicrobial Resistance
Saima Wazed, the Regional Director for South-East Asia of the World Health Organization (WHO), has emphasized the growing threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) due to high population density, limited healthcare access, and misuse of antimicrobials. AMR poses a significant risk to global health by reducing the effectiveness of life-saving medicines. This year, World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) follows the approval of the 2024 Political Declaration on AMR at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Meeting. This declaration aims for at least 60% of countries to implement funded national action plans by 2030.
In the WHO South-East Asia Region, addressing AMR is urgent. SEARO has been active in promoting action against AMR globally. Developing countries are particularly vulnerable, and SEARO co-hosted events at the UNGA to foster a global response to AMR. The theme for WAAW, 'Educate. Advocate. Act now', calls for immediate action to combat AMR through education, advocacy, and concrete measures.
Wazed stressed the importance of translating political commitments into measurable outcomes, with community engagement and private-sector partnerships playing a crucial role. SEARO supports Member States in achieving AMR targets under the One Health framework, with the help of partners like the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Organisation for Animal Health, and the United Nations Environment Programme. Wazed urged for united efforts to protect the efficacy of antimicrobials for future generations.
