Saima Wazed, the daughter of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the WHO South-East Asia Regional Director, has expressed her deep sorrow over the current situation in Bangladesh. She is heartbroken about the loss of lives and the ongoing unrest in her country.
In a heartfelt post on X, Saima Wazed shared her grief, saying, “Heartbroken with the loss of life in my country that I love. So heartbroken that I cannot see and hug my mother during this difficult time.” She reaffirmed her commitment to her role at the World Health Organization.
Saima Wazed took on the role of Regional Director for the WHO South-East Asia Region in February this year. She is the first Bangladeshi and only the second woman to hold this position.
Bangladesh is currently facing a turbulent political situation. Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position as Prime Minister on August 5 amid mounting protests. Following her resignation, President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the parliament to pave the way for an interim administration.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of the interim government. In a statement, Yunus urged everyone to stay calm and refrain from violence, emphasizing the importance of protecting the country for future generations.
