S Jaishankar Pays Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in Geneva and Strengthens Ties with Germany
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has arrived in Geneva, Switzerland. He began his visit by paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi, emphasizing the relevance of Gandhi’s message of harmony and sustainability in today’s polarized world.
In a post on X, Jaishankar shared, “Started my visit to Geneva by paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi. In a world of polarisation and conflict, Bapu’s message of harmony and sustainability is more relevant than ever.”
During his stay in Geneva, Jaishankar will meet the Swiss Foreign Minister to review the close partnership between India and Switzerland and explore ways to enhance bilateral ties. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that Geneva hosts numerous UN bodies and international organizations, and Jaishankar will meet with their representatives.
Jaishankar’s visit to Switzerland follows his trips to Germany and Saudi Arabia. In Berlin, he met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal greetings. Jaishankar also met Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius to discuss security issues and noted progress in defense ties.
This visit marks Jaishankar’s third bilateral trip to Berlin as EAM and his second visit to Germany this year, following his attendance at the Munich Security Conference in February 2024. He also met his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, to review bilateral relations and prepare for the upcoming 7th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations in New Delhi in October 2024.
Additionally, Jaishankar discussed regional and global matters with various German officials, including Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific, and West Asia. He met with Friedrich Merz, Chairman of CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group; Michael Roth, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag; and other select Parliamentarians.
