Rwanda-Backed Forces in DRC Announce Ceasefire for Humanitarian Reasons
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), forces supported by Rwanda have decided to halt their advance in the east due to humanitarian concerns. The AFC/M23 rebel coalition declared a unilateral ceasefire starting Tuesday. This group, with support from Rwandan troops, recently captured Goma, a major city in eastern DRC. The United Nations reported that 900 people have died and thousands have been displaced.
The rebels stated, "The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) informs the public that in response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the regime in Kinshasa it declares a ceasefire starting February 4, 2025 for humanitarian reasons." The announcement was made on social media by M23 spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka.
Goma, a city with two million residents and rich in minerals, was taken over by the rebels who then moved towards Bukavu, another key city. Despite previous intentions to capture the capital, Kinshasa, the rebels clarified they have no interest in taking Bukavu or other areas, emphasizing their commitment to civilian protection.
The ceasefire announcement comes before a regional summit where DRC President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame are expected to meet. Past attempts at peace talks have failed, but Kenya, leading the East African Community bloc, anticipates their attendance. Meanwhile, G7 foreign ministers have urged all parties to resume negotiations and ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians.
