RR Swain Appointed as New Police Chief of Jammu and Kashmir Amid Rising Terror Attacks
The Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed RR Swain as the Director General of Police for Jammu and Kashmir, effective until September 30, 2024. Swain, who was already holding the additional charge, will now officially take on this role.
Swain’s appointment comes at a critical time, as there has been a noticeable increase in terror attacks in the Jammu region. Recent incidents include an attack on an army convoy in Kathua and encounters in Doda and Udhampur.
In July, the Ministry of Home Affairs informed the Lok Sabha that 28 people, including civilians and security personnel, were killed in 11 terror-related incidents and 24 encounters or counter-terror operations up to July 21 this year. One notable incident involved the Indian Army foiling an attack by the Pakistan Border Action Team (BAT) along the Line of Control in the Machchal sector of Kupwara district, resulting in the death of one Pakistani intruder and one Indian Army soldier, with four others injured.
