Rohit Sharma Faces Tough Choice Between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for India’s ODI Against Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sri Lanka, August 1: Ahead of India’s first ODI against Sri Lanka, captain Rohit Sharma discussed the challenge of choosing between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the wicketkeeper-batter role. Both players are considered match-winners, making the decision difficult.

India’s first ODI against Sri Lanka will start on Friday in Colombo, following their 3-0 clean sweep in the T20I series. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Rohit said, “I will need to discuss with the head coach. You will see it tomorrow when we play the game.” He added, “It is a tough call. Both are quality players. They are match-winners in their own way. It is always nice to have problems picking up the team like that.”

Rohit highlighted that having such selection dilemmas indicates the quality within the team. He said, “When you are discussing too much on who to pick or leave, then that means there is quality in the team. Which I think is a good thing. I look forward to these problems till I am captain.”

The wicketkeeper’s role is a significant decision for India. KL Rahul took on the role during Rishabh Pant’s absence in 2023, including the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the South Africa tour. Rahul has impressive stats, with 1355 runs in 35 matches as a wicketkeeper, averaging 58.91 with two hundreds and ten fifties. Pant also performed well in 2022, scoring 336 runs in 12 games, including his maiden ODI hundred against England.

Rohit, who retired from T20Is after leading India to a World Cup win in June, joked about still feeling connected to the format. He said, “The only difference I feel is that, I have felt like I’ve been rested from the T20Is, like it used to happen in the past. And then a big tournament will come up, and we have to again get ready for the T20Is.”

India’s tour of Sri Lanka began on July 27 with the T20I series, where India won all three matches. The ODIs will be held at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on August 2, 4, and 7.
