Renowned Folk Singer Sharda Sinha Passes Away
Known as the ‘Bihar Kokila’
Sharda Sinha, a celebrated folk singer from India, passed away on Tuesday at AIIMS Delhi. She was 72 years old. Sinha was known for her contributions to Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Hindi folk music, earning her the title ‘Bihar Kokila’.
Cause of Death
According to an official from AIIMS Delhi, Sinha died due to refractory shock caused by septicaemia, a severe blood infection. She had been battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, since 2018. Her condition worsened on Monday, leading to her being placed on a ventilator.
Legacy and Achievements
Sharda Sinha’s career began in the 1970s, and she became a cultural ambassador for the traditional folk music of Bihar. Her voice is synonymous with the Chhath festival, celebrated in Bihar and North India. She gained national recognition with songs like ‘Babool’ from the film ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’. In 2018, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, and also received a National Film Award.
