RCB’s Captaincy Decision Still Pending, Virat Kohli Retained for IPL 2025
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, announced that no decision has been made regarding the captaincy for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Despite media speculation about Virat Kohli’s return as captain, Bobat clarified that the team is exploring options. Kohli, along with Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal, has been retained ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Bobat expressed that not retaining Faf du Plessis, who led RCB to playoffs in two of the last three seasons, was a strategic choice to keep options open for the auction. Under Faf’s leadership, RCB made a remarkable comeback this year, winning six consecutive matches to reach the playoffs.
Another tough decision was not retaining pacer Mohammed Siraj, a key player since 2018, due to the need for a balanced bowling attack. Siraj took 15 wickets in 14 matches last season.
RCB also aimed to retain Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who had a strong season but may miss the next IPL due to back surgery. Green scored 255 runs and took 10 wickets in 13 matches.
Bobat emphasized the importance of strengthening the Indian core, leading to the retention of Patidar and Dayal. Patidar impressed with 395 runs in 15 matches, while Dayal took 15 wickets in 14 matches, showcasing their potential.
