Rahul Gandhi’s Meeting with Fishermen and Other Delegations in Parliament
New Delhi [India], August 8: Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi claimed that a group of fishermen who came to meet him in Parliament was stopped. Speaking to reporters, he said the fishermen had issues related to Sri Lanka. ‘It is our right to meet anyone. But they are not allowing it,’ he said.
Rahul Gandhi mentioned that he often meets delegations, including those from Child Welfare, and that it is easier to meet them in the LoP Chamber in Parliament. Earlier, he went to the reception area of the Parliament with Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.
Congress posted on X that Rahul Gandhi met delegations from the Right to Food Campaign and fishermen from across India, listening to their concerns and standing up for their rights. Gaurav Gogoi added that Rahul Gandhi’s resolve of ‘Bharat Jodo’ continues as he plans to meet a student delegation that has not yet entered Parliament.
Members of the Safai Karamchari Andolan and people involved in manual scavenging also met Rahul Gandhi. Congress posted on X that the Modi government claims manual scavenging has been eradicated, but government data shows 377 people lost their lives in the last 5 years while cleaning tanks. They urged the government to ensure the safety and betterment of manual scavengers.
Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi and other Congress MPs attended a meeting of Congress Lok Sabha MPs in the Parliament House Annexe in Delhi. Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which aims to address issues related to the powers of State Waqf Boards, registration and survey of waqf properties, and removal of encroachments.
