On August 1, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi visited Chooralmala in Wayanad, Kerala, which was severely affected by landslides on July 30. They were accompanied by Congress general secretary KC Venugopal.

Massive Landslides Cause Destruction

Two major landslides struck Mundakkai and Chooralmala, causing extensive damage, loss of lives, and injuries to hundreds. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan chaired a high-level meeting to address the situation.

Rescue and Rehabilitation Efforts

Chief Minister Vijayan stated that the main focus is on rescuing missing persons and starting rehabilitation. He appreciated the efforts of the Army personnel and highlighted the construction of a 100-foot bridge by the Army’s Madras Sappers to aid rescue operations.

NDRF DIG Mohsen Shahidi reported over 200 deaths and ongoing recovery of bodies. The Indian Army has ramped up rescue operations, successfully evacuating many people to safety.
