Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi to Visit Wayanad After Tragic Landslides
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are expected to visit Wayanad, Kerala, where massive landslides have claimed 24 lives. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal emphasized the need for collective efforts to ensure the safety of as many people as possible.
Venugopal mentioned that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has assured full cooperation and that extensive rehabilitation measures are underway. He stated, “It is very unfortunate and the saddest day for us. We are trying to involve maximum-level rehabilitation measures and rescue efforts.”
Venugopal also noted that Rahul Gandhi has been in contact with the District Collector, the Chief Minister, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to offer support. Congress MP Hibi Eden and KC Venugopal have given an adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha, urging the central government to expedite rescue operations.
Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala called for collective efforts to provide relief to the victims and their families, stressing that rescue operations should be conducted on a war-footing basis. Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh described the situation as “unimaginable,” noting that a village has been isolated and washed out.
Kerala minister Veena George confirmed that 24 bodies have been retrieved and that teams from the NDRF, Civil Defence, and Navy are present in Wayanad. The landslide has affected Meppadi, Mundakkal Town, and Chooralmala areas. Rescue personnel, medical equipment, and health workers have been dispatched to local hospitals.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has established a control room to provide immediate relief and rescue assistance. A delegation of five ministers has been sent to the disaster-hit area to coordinate the rescue operations.
