Background
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case on April 22, 2015. The case involved the allocation of the Hutar Sector-C and Hurilong coal blocks in Jharkhand to Rungta Projects Ltd. by the 36th Screening Committee of the Ministry of Coal.
False Claims
Rungta Projects Ltd. submitted an application on December 30, 2006, claiming to be an independent mining entity with a firm agreement to supply coal to a sponge iron plant in Hazari Bagh, Jharkhand. However, the company made false claims about the capacity of the end-use project, land acquisition, and investments. They also concealed previous coal block allocations to their group company.
Investigation and Trial
The CBI’s investigation confirmed the false claims and concealment of information. A chargesheet was filed on June 30, 2015, followed by a supplementary chargesheet on January 29, 2018. After a thorough trial, the court found the five accused guilty and convicted them.
