Punjab Police and NHRC Team Up to Fight Drug Abuse in Prisons

On Monday, Punjab police held an important meeting with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to discuss ways to combat drug abuse in prisons and disrupt supply chains. The meeting included senior officers from Punjab, UT Chandigarh Jails, Police, Social Security, Health, and other departments.

The official account of DGP Punjab police shared on social media, “Collaborating for a safer Punjab! Met with Special Monitor NHRC, Rakesh Asthana, IPS (Rtd), and other senior officers to discuss effective strategies for combating drug abuse in prisons and disrupting supply chains. Committed to prison reforms and ensuring a safer, rehabilitative environment for all.”

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Skattar Singh in Punjab’s Tarn-Tarn district for laundering money from drug trafficking. This arrest was part of an ongoing investigation based on First Information Reports by Punjab Police and the Narcotics Control Bureau. During a search operation last year, narcotic substances and arms were recovered from multiple locations.

Additionally, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav reported the arrest of three drug smugglers with 5 kg of heroin in Amritsar. In less than a week, around 27.2 kg of heroin has been recovered from the area, showcasing the continuous efforts to tackle drug-related crimes.
