Psychiatrist Rajiv Mehta on Work Stress After EY Employee’s Tragic Death

Following the tragic death of Anna Sebastian Perayil, an EY employee, due to alleged overwork, psychiatrist Rajiv Mehta from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital emphasized the importance of work-life balance. He urged employers to recognize that workers are human beings and advised employees to be assertive with demanding employers.

Mehta explained that work stress can lead to symptoms like decreased interest, sadness, irritability, forgetfulness, helplessness, hopelessness, death wishes, suicidal attempts, and anxiety. He advised that life should include family, friends, and vacations, and that ambitions should be pursued with patience.

Anna Sebastian Perayil, a chartered accountant from Kerala, worked at EY’s Pune office for four months before her death on July 20. Her mother’s letter, which went viral, alleged that EY’s work culture and excessive workload contributed to her daughter’s demise. EY expressed deep sadness and assured that they are taking steps to improve employee well-being.
