Protests Erupt in West Bengal for Justice in Kolkata Doctor’s Tragic Case

In West Bengal, torchlight protests were held in Siliguri on Sunday, demanding justice for the victim of the Kolkata woman doctor’s rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College. One protestor said, “If justice is not served now, we may never receive it.”

In Bhangore, South 24 Parganas, local women also staged a protest, demanding justice for the victim. The Indian Secular Front (ISF) joined the call for justice in Bhangore. In Kolkata, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and BJP workers protested at Shyambazar, voicing their concerns over the case.

Earlier today, CBI officials conducted a polygraph test on the arrested suspect, Sanjay Roy, in connection with the case. Parimal Dey, a teacher from Alipurduar, who was honoured with the Banga Ratna award by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2019, decided to return the award in protest against the state government’s response to the incident. Parimal said, “I have decided to return the Banga Ratna award. Given the protests in Bengal and beyond, my conscience compels me to return it. I support the protest. The way she (Mamata Banerjee) is running the administration is not right.”

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered that security for Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) while hearing the case. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
